“The third part, the methyl ester, turns into methanol, which is a
poison — though fruit juices have higher concentrations of methanol.
Woodrow C. Monte, emeritus professor of nutrition at the University of
Arizona, ascribes a host of ills, including multiple sclerosis, to
low-level methanol poisoning.

A little bit of regular sugar. I don’t like artificial sweeteners,
they taste ‘off’.

Associated with a medical doctor, I have read numerous reports about
the many ill effects of these sweeteners. Safe alternatives are
Stevia, Xylitol, and Erythritol. According to chemists, Splenda is
chlorinated sugar with a closer chemical resemblance to pesticides
than sugar. In rats, it lead to shrunken thymus gland, kidney
disorders, enlarged liver, etc. NutraSweet (made by Monsanto…need I
say more?) has been quoted by doctors as “the most dangerous
substances on the market that is added to foods.” It is known to kill
brain cells by over-stimulating them, leading to epilepsy, dementia,
fatigue, etc. It is the most complained about food additives with the
FDA. It is composed of 10% methanol, a wood alcohol known to be a
poison and leading to brain tumors, among other things. For those
interested on the subject, watch “Sweet misery”

As for me, I try to have no sweeteners of any kind. Sometimes a small
treat of dark chocolate with actual sugar in. Sometimes some maple
syrup in my porridge. But that’s it. I’m 58 and my doctor says I am
the healthiest person she knows.

All artificial sweeter users might want to read this article from
Science Daily. A laboratory study has shown that mice fed artificial
sweeteners had increased apatite and and fat retention. They got fat
on it while another group fed sugar did not.

I am diabetic and the artificial sweeteners are a godsend for me. I
take insulin shots 4 times a day, and foods sweetened with sugar are
not in my diet. My wife replaces sugar with splenda in cooking and I
am able to keep a more traditional diet.

Like Truvia best. Tastes most like sugar. It also comes frm Stevia
plant but processed differently. Dr Weil said its probably a safer bet
than Stevia. Was Truvia also part of these studies?

Methanol/formaldehyde diseases started showing up after invention of
canning in France in 1807, when in a few decades, it was extended from
meats to fruits juices and vegetables, which contain a lot of pectins,
combined with cellulose — over time these contents, heated once and
sealed air tight to prevent fermentation by external bacteria and
yeast, soaked in water, released methanol from the pectins — tomatoes
are the strongest source. In a few decades, the first cases of
Alzheimer’s and multiple sclerosis were described. Fortunately, in mot
of these fruits juices and vegetables, there is even more ethanol than
the available methanol — ethanol prevents the ADH1 enzyme in humans
from turning methanol into highly toxic formaldehyde, free floating in
cells.
Very tiny amounts of formaldehyde, which becomes its highly reactive
hydrated form inside cells, suffice to damage and mutate the DNA, RNA,
and proteins — killing cells, preventing mitochrondria from giving
energy to sustain life functions — attracting macrophages (white
blood cells) to eat the altered proteins, also dying, becoming pus in
local micro lesions, methylating DNA, leading to later cancers, and
causing many birth defects in the fetus — still births and preterm
deliveries, and spina bifida, cleft palate, autism, Asperger’s.
Prevention, treatment, and more successful research studies on
diseases, will result from simply avoiding the many methanol sources
in modern life.

I live in Thailand and it’s disgusting the amount of sugar in their
foods. Walk into a 7-11 and it’s virtually impossible to find
something healthy to eat. SOME of the convenience stores have Pepsi
Max or Coke Zero. They also have sunflower seed packets, but that’s
it. There are virtually no diet foods, and excepting the occasional
Pepsi Max/Coke Zero, nothing with sugar substitutes. Even the MILK and
soy milk has sugar in it.

I use this natural sweetener:
iHerb.com – Nunaturals, Nustevia, White Stevia Powder – 5 lb. – bulk –
approx. $48 –
This is NON-BITTER, natural, essentially zero calories ( no worry
about health problems).
Also, this extract powder is concentrated, so a fraction of a teaspoon
of stevia equals several teaspoons of sugar.
The 5 lb. pack lasts me for 2 or 3 years.
I am happy as a clam with this product.

1. To taste your food unaltered by the competing taste of your drinks,
try water, unsweetened tea or black coffee. Admittedly these latter do
have taste (and minute quantities of natural sugars) but besides their
health benefits, they complement food in a less distracting manner
than flavored soft drinks, juices or even sweetened, creamed coffee
and tea.
2. Beware of labels that list other sugars like maltose and fructose
without calling them sugar. Or “dehydrated cane juice” without
mentioning that cane is sugar cane, and “concentrated” apple and pear
juices which are actually fructose, just like high-fructose corn
syrup.
3. The article lists wt. gain and diabetes as “the” bad outcomes
associated with these products, esp. sugar. But what about tooth decay
and gum disease from natural and possibly “artifical” sugars as well?
Bacteria can often metabolize the “artificial” sugars, like sorbitol
and xylitol, contained in many sugar-free candies and gum. The result:
tooth and gum problems, and in some cases, diarrhea.

I gave up sugar many years ago when I switched from carnivore to vegan
to raw vegan. After trying agave (which I now know is not good because
it’s high in fructose) for years, then coconut nectar (from the
coconut palm tree), I’m now using stevia powder to sweeten my
desserts. I find that a tiny amount (ranging from a pinch to a quarter
of a teaspoon) sweetens my desserts without adding any flavor of its
own (as, say, honey does). Stevia is by far the most healthful
sweetener. Low or no calories, low or no fructose, low on the glycemic
scale. But make sure to buy only pure stevia, as some are mixed with
such ingredients as maltodextrin, which is very high on the glycemic
scale. You can also grow your own stevia, as it’s an herb!

The pesticide Methoxychlor was also an organochloride like
Splenda/sucralose and was written about in Silent Spring.
Organochlorides are notorious for being endocrine disruptors which can
be especially harmful to developing fetuses who are dependent upon
hormone signals that initiate everything from brain orchestration to
sexual development. Diethylstilbestrol (DES) is a great example of how
much harm can occur when hormone signals are interfered with. In the
Book, Our Stolen Future, the author has a chapter that examines the
role of hormones in development called, “Hormones: Chemical Messengers
That Work in Parts per Trillion.” This site has the excerpt for anyone

Fully 11% of aspartame is methanol — 1,120 mg aspartame
in 2 L diet soda, almost six 12-oz cans, gives 123 mg
methanol (wood alcohol). If 30% of the methanol is turned
into formaldehyde, the amount of formaldehyde, 37 mg,

This site explains that the harmful rat dose of 500 mg/kg body weight per
day was
divided by 10 for “interspecies extrapolation” (the higher vulnerability of
humans than rats),
by 10 for “range of sensitivity” (the variation of individual human
vulnerability), and
by 10 for “subchronic to chronic exposure” (the increased danger from
lifetime as compared to the 3 month exposure in the rat test),
giving a total reduction of 10x10x10 = 1000 for the UF = Uncertainty Factor.
The human Oral RfD is the rat Oral RfD divided by 1000, so
500 mg/kg/day is reduced to 0.5 mg/kg/day , so that the allowed dose for a
60 kg human is 30 mg oral methanol daily.
Moreover, a recent study found that after 4 months of moderate oral
aspartame, rats took four times longer to finish a simple, one-turn maze —
an alarming level of neurotoxicity:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aspartameNM/message/1088
Murray, full plain text & critique:
chronic aspartame in rats affects memory, brain cholinergic receptors, and
brain chemistry, Christian B, McConnaughey M et al, 2004 May:
2004.06.05 rmforall
“Control and treated rats were trained in a T-maze to a particular side and
then periodically tested to see how well they retained the learned response.
Rats that had received aspartame (250 mg/kg/day) in the drinking water
for 3 or 4 months showed a significant increase in time to reach the reward
in the T-maze, suggesting a possible effect on memory due to the artificial
sweetener.”
The 11% methanol component of aspartame is immediately released in the GI
tract, so these rats were being exposed to only 27.5 mg/kg/day methanol.
The EPA IRIS on 1998.05.05 used a 1986 90 day rat study to find a
No-Observed-Effect Level (NOEL) value of 500 mg/kg/day, which, divided by
1000, became their human long-term safe methanol level of 0.5 mg per kg body
weight per day, which for a 60 kg average person is 30 mg methanol daily,
for oral exposure.
However, the rat level is 18 times greater than that for the level of
dramatic memory loss and clear-cut brain changes found by McConnaughey M,
May 2004.
This suggests reducing the human long-term safe level twenty times to
.025 mg/kg/day = 25 micrograms per kg body weight per day,
which for a 60 kg average person is 1.5 mg oral methanol per day.
methanol from aspartame, wood and cigarette smoke, and many sources is
made by ADH1 enzyme into formaldehyde within cells inside walls of
human blood vessels, harming adjacent tissues, the WC Monte paradigm:
Rich Murray 2012.06.16
See WC Monte’s two 1-hour video lectures May 2012
http://www.WhileScienceSleeps.com .
The 200 mg aspartame in a 12-oz can of aspartame drink is 11% by
weight methanol, 22 mg, which is soon released from the GI tract into
the blood, where quickly any tissues with high levels of the ADH1
enzyme within the cells of blood capillary walls and adjacent tissues,
especially liver, kidney, brain, retina, etc., in humans only, turn
the methanol into formaldehyde within these cells, which, being highly
reactive, quickly binds with and disables DNA, RNA, and proteins
inside the cells, causing cell death, attracting macrophages (white
blood cells), which also die, creating durable, cumulative, evolving
complex micro lesions.
This affects the fetus, as well, or not so well…
So, there are many resulting novel modern “diseases of civilization”
in humans only, for each type of damaged tissue, including
Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, lupus, arthritis, the birth defects
spina bifida, autism, and Asperger’s, many specific cancers, and
chronic ailments of liver, kidney, heart, lung, joint, skin, muscle,
etc.
